London trip for Tarot – Origins & Afterlives

93!

Last week we were on short trip to London to see the exhibition in Warburg Institute (yes, we also wonder why Yorke collection is not digitalized yet, at least officially, when some manuscripts are available in PDF for some senior OTO members).

Although it shows history of the Tarot and its contemporary forms, exhibition is rather small. Fortunately, entrance is free! 🙂

Our main interest was seeing Thoth Tarot original paintings of Frieda Lady Harris, based on designs described by Aleister Crowley. There were 9 paintings exhibited, along with other objects related to Book of Thoth and older printings of tarot cards. (Btw Need to get The Lady and the Beast book…)

For those interested in particular cards, list of exhibited cards below:
XIII Death
Six of Disks – Success
XVI The Tower
I The Magus
VIII Adjustment
II The Priestess
0 The Fool
X Fortune
IX The Hermit

Original paintings and their sizes are impressive to be honest. There is no other way to notice some details, although newest prints of the Thoth Tarot cards are pretty nice and colours there are not distorted.

Photo of my favourite card 🙂

I hope Warburg institute will be able to prepare larger exhibition. They received some additional funding recently, so there is a chance!

If you happen to be in London, book a free ticket and see those paintings before its too late! Exhibition closes at 30th April 2025. Tarot – Origins & Afterlives | The Warburg Institute

During this weekend we also visited Treadwell’s and Atlantis Bookshops, British Museum to see John Dee Enochian tools and Freemasons’ Hall. There is a lot of stuff going on there for occult enthusiasts, but unfortunately time was very limited. Need to go there more frequently for sure 😀

One lucky finding in Atlantis Bookshop, just after reading correspondences between Crowley etc. and Frank Bennet. Sometimes it’s worth to look into those bookshops. I wish there were more specialized occult shops in Poland 🙁

Actually, there is one more thing I forgot! There is a small exhibition related to Tarot in Atlantis Bookshop and it also runs until 3rd May 2025:
Tarot Then & Now – tarot exhibition | THE ATLANTIS BOOKSHOP

Few photos for encouragement 🙂

See you!
